car, vehicle, transportationWorld Solar Challenge: How far in a solar car? (HACKADAY 20201221) The World Solar Challenge is a competition that has aimed to show the true potential of solar powered transport. Now 30 years since its inception, what used to be impossible is in fact achieved by multiple teams in under one tenth of the original time.

The Solar Impulse 2 landed in Abu Dhabi before sunrise on Tuesday, after a trip that took 17 months and covered more than 42,000 kilometers. Although poor weather conditions delayed the flight many times, energy from the sun provided all of the power required for the long and difficult journey.

(Guardian 2016) Solar Impulse 2 has completed the first round-the-world flight by a solar-powered aeroplane, after touching down in Abu Dhabi early on Tuesday. The final leg of the feat, aimed at showcasing the potential of renewable energy, was a bumpy one, with turbulence driven by hot desert air leaving the solo pilot, Bertrand Piccard, fighting with the controls. The plane, which has a wingspan wider than a Boeing 747 and carries more than 17,000 solar cells on its wings, began the circumnavigation in March 2015 in Abu Dhabi.

(CNN 2016) The first aircraft powered solely by the sun made its landing into history, reaching Abu Dhabi on Tuesday and completing a 25,000 mile, round-the-world journey that began over a year ago. The Swiss-engineered Solar Impulse 2 was piloted by Bertrand Piccard on the final part of the epic expedition that took off from Cairo earlier this week. The final stop completes its 17-leg, milestone journey that used only the power of the sun's rays.
car, transportationThree electric cars with solar panels that can be pre-ordered now. (Royalsblue.com Jan. 2022) Electric cars are good for the environment, but even better than these are electric cars equipped with solar panels. Fortunately, several models have appeared on the market, and three of them can be pre-ordered or booked right now.
car, transportationSolar powered cars could soon hit the street, but can they be efficient enough to go mainstream? (Freethink.com Dec 2021) Solar-powered cars aren’t new — they’ve been racing in the Australian Outback for nearly 30 years. But in order to go mainstream, the cars will need to get way more efficient with their energy use to be able to compete with fully electric or fossil-fueled cars. Now, a growing number of startups are working to make that happen; and if solar powered cars become more practical, they can have a role in helping us build a more sustainable world.
boat, transportationPlanetsolar (soundingsonline.com 2010) The 100-foot Turanor PlanetSolar - the world's largest solar-powered boat - set off Sept. 27 from Monte Carlo with six European crewmembers aiming to become the first to circumnavigate on a motor vessel powered by the sun alone.
