Solar Decathlon Video ’05-’07

The International Competition of Solar Home Design (2005+2007)

Since 2002, the U.S. Department of Energy has sponsored an international competition, called the Solar Decathlon,  to design, build and operate the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered home. College and university teams from around the world transport their competition houses to a central location to assemble a solar village and participate in the ten-part contest. In 2022, the Solar Decathlon competition continues to evolve, though the goal remains stay the same – designing for the future.

This 50 min video, produced by Rahus Institute-Solar Schoolhouse, chronicles the 2005 and 2007 Solar Decathlon competitions, both held on The Mall in Washington DC. It tells the story of the talented student teams, highlights their innovative technology, and suggests strategies for a sustainable future. Share this video with your K12 students as a means to inspire – to design and create your own model solar homes, to explore sustainable design careers, to imagine improvements to your own school, to ignite a conversation.
